Tip of the Week

Tip of the Week: Start Looking into "The Cloud"

The Cloud is where it is going these days in Technology. The main concern most people express when discussing the issue of "The Cloud" is security. The Cloud is putting your data on an external hosting site (someone else's computer) and accessing it via the internet. There are security concerns because you are entrusting someone else with your stuff.

Microsoft has been attacked for years and has, consequently, had to put a lot of time and money into security. I would say that they are the leaders in this industry if only for the fact that they've had to invest over the years in it. No matter how they got to be the leader, they know what they're doing.

This week's Tip is to try a Hotmail account and look into the SkyDrive and Web Apps. Google also offers Cloud technology with their GMAIL accounts with file storage abilities and Google Apps. Google's company philosophy, however, is that of complete openness and sharing, so, as has been reported in the news, your searching and behaviour on Google is essentially being recorded. So, depending on how you feel about that, you may want to look at Microsoft's Hotmail first.

Technology News
on the Streets

NPR did an excellent story and interview of the two men that really started the Intel Corporation. There were several things they said that really perked up my ears, and that I wish young entrepreneurs would listen to today.

The first of these two things was how they built the company with the long view in mind. They were looking for how to keep the company going forever and what was the best strategy to do that. Eventually they found that magic in their work on the Microchip Processor, still the top processing chip in the world today, years later.

The second of these two things was how they hated the two words, "Exit Strategy." Too many tech companies are now created with the words Exit Strategy as part of their business plan. The idea being, how can they get the business desirable and sellable to make the quick money? This is not an investment over time or a commitment to something innovative, but rather a way to keep giving in to the big dogs and running away with the quick buck.
